Red, white, and blue signify the Coast Guard traditional colors, and the light blue denotes the lakes over which the USCG Sector Sault Sainte Marie stands guard The three wavy bars allude to the French translation of the location's name, "The Rapids of Saint Mary," and also symbolize the three lakes under the Sector's watchful eye: Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. The ship's wheel and its seven exposed spokes denote the seven missions of Sector Sault Sainte Marie: national defense, protection of natural resources, search and rescue, law enforcement, ice breaking, ports and waterway security, and maritime safety.

Two Great Lakes freighters denote the strong commercial shipping industry in the area and symbolize the extensive teamwork that exists between USCG Sector Sault Sainte Marie and its Canadian counterparts.
